Dutch cultured protein company Mosa Meat said over the weekend it has reduced the cost of its fat media by 66 times thanks to the work of a group the company refers to as its Fat Team. Without listing actual price numbers, Mosa Meat said its fat medium now costs 1.52 percent of what it did less than two years ago, in September of 2019.
Australian startup Nourish Ingredients, which makes plant-based fats, announced today that it has raised $11 million (USD) in initial funding. The round was led by Horizon Ventures and Main Sequence Ventures (a venture firm founded by Australia’s national science agency).
Grocery stores traditionally offer multiple blends of lean meat and fat in beef products, and Beyond Meat says its new burgers are an attempt to offer similar choices. Beyond says the new juicier patty has 35 percent less saturated fat than the average 80 / 20 (80 percent lean to 20 percent fat) beef burger. The other option comes in even lower, with 55 percent less saturated fat but slightly less juicy results. Beyond says these new burgers will also maintain the same savory flavor and lower caloric content of its previous versions.
Peace of Meat is on a mission to transform the multi-billion dollar meat industry. The Belgian startup has developed its first products: cultured animal fat and liver. Per Vegconomist, the company has produced 20 grams of cultured animal fat as proof of concept. In a decade, with the right facilities, the startup believes it can produce 100,000 tonnes of its cultured product.
